In the popular imagination, at least, it probably wouldn’t be right to describe Rahat Fateh Ali Khan as a household name here in the UK - it’s certainly fair to say that he doesn’t really receive any kind of widespread television or radio exposure - but when you consider the fact that this guy plays arenas around the country on a regular basis. With a host of accolades under his belt, Khan has toured the world interpreting the traditional South Asian music he has grown up with and introducing the eastern flavour to the west playing to attentive sold-out crowds across the globe. In 2014 Khan became the first Pakistani to be invited to perform at the Nobel Peace Prize concert held in Norway where he performed the songs “Tumhe Dillagi” and “Mast Qalander”.

In 2010 Khan was awarded the Star Screen Award for Best Male Playback for his vocal performance on the song “Ajj Din Chadheya” from the 2009 film “Love Ajj Kal”. In 2004 he made his Bollywood debut in the film “Paap” with the hit song “Maan Ki Lagan” kicking off his soon to be prolific Bollywood career. Gaining notoriety, Khan took his hand in orchestral and film music composition as he worked on the soundtrack for the 2002 film “The Four Feathers” while producing nationalistic and traditional inspired songs. In 1995, Rahat worked alongside Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder to work on the soundtrack for the Hollywood film “Dead Man Walking”, marrying the East with the West on the tracks “The Face of Love” and “The Long Road”. Rahat spent much of the nineties touring Pakistan, India and the UK.

In 1985 the group embarked on a full UK tour.ĭuring the 90’s Rahat frequented on the Lollywood scene as a playback singer in films such as “Mard Jeenay Nahi Detay” and “Pal Do Pal”. At 15, Rahat was invited to join his uncle’s Qwwali music group with whom traversed the globe spreading their devotional music. His formal training in Qawwali music began at seven, with his first performance at 13 at his grandfather’s devotional.

Born into a South Asian music dynasty with his father a musician and his world famous Qawwali singer uncle, Rahat began singing with them from age three.
